I’m being followed by a moon shadow
Leapin’ and hoppin’ like a moonshadow
Moonshadow, moonshadow.

~Cat Stevens (Moonshadow, Tea for the Tillerman)

We have a shadow, an outline of our body, a constant, always with us. It may not show our depth or our brightness, but it reminds us that we are not alone.

In playful times, we make figures with our hands’ shadows on the walls. We get childish pleasure in seeing the duck, for example, materialize from the dark shapes, even as we know for certain it’s just the shadows of our hands.

Light, silhouette. Reality, perception.

What is your favorite finger shadow figure?

  2. I love making shapes with my hands and fingers – there’re so many variations. I must try them out as shadows, which will of course be of particular interest to me. It was something that fascinated my boys when they were boys. Thanks Beth!
