I’m going down to the library
Picking out a book, check it in, check it out
~Tom Chapin

Libraries, unbiased holders of information, offer access to knowledge and act as a community resource and entertainment center. Activities include live presentations, book discussions, CDs, DVDs, books, tapes, which level the field for those who might have limitations (visual or auditory). Libraries provide access to banned material, they protect our personal check-out history. Throughout the years, tyrants have burned books and libraries in efforts to stop the flow of ideas and information. As quiet and unassuming as they appear, they are powerhouses as repositories for centuries of works, ideas, and culture.

Books, CDs. Quiet, lectures. Freedom of speech, freedom of choice.

What is your favorite thing to do at the library?

Favorite thing: walk back and forth through the stacks, immersed in the aroma of books — paper, leather, ink — scan the titles, lift out each intriguing one, read the first few pages, put it back or sit down with it for awhile, then move on. Like speed dating in the library, never can tell what you’ll take home or how it’ll change you.

  2. Lovely post on libraries Beth thank you. I love my local library and just wish I could spend more time lounging about there. Usually it’s a dash in and out, sign in, choose (difficult decisions), sign out.

    • Our library has such wonderful programs that I do spend more time there each week. Last night was Readers Theatre, Thursday is a program for my daughter’s son.
